Individual Clinical Case Study IV

An Individual Case Study of Chronic Hepatitis B with Acute Active Flare Up

Patient’s Name: Z Liao

Gender: Male

Age: 43

First Visit: August 27, 1990

Primary complaints: whole body jaundice, pain in the liver area

Secondary complaints: tired and dizzy, constantly exhausted, gums bleed when brushing teeth, bitter taste in mouth, bad breathe, nausea, lost appetite, and brown colored urine

Treatment history: Z Liao said he went to hospitals and was refused admission. He also tried Western

medical clinics and was unable to be treated. He said he knew his situation was serious and wanted to try Chinese herbal medicine.

Examination: whole body jaundice (skin and sclera), extremely swollen belly, and no energy

  • Blood Pressure: 130-90mg
  • Heart / Lungs: normal
  • Liver: 3-finger distance below the right hypochondrium and 2 fingers below the sternum, pain on palpation and tenderness
  • Spleen: fairly swollen
  • Pulse: fast and wiry
  • Tongue: tongue body is red, sticky thick white tongue coating

Blood Test: August 22, 1990

  • SGPT 2484 IU/L; Normal level (11-45)
  • SGOP 1200 IU/L; Normal level (11-35)

Diagnosis: Chronic Hepatitis B Acute Active Flare Up

Treatment: Liver No. 1™ (爱华活肝片) 6 tablets each time, 3 times daily, one month supply

Return Visit: October 21, 1990

Patient Report: Z Liao reported he feels great and he is able to sleep better. He has gotten his appetite back without any nausea. He doesn’t feel pain around his liver area anymore. But he still has a bitter taste in his mouth and his bad breathe hasn't gone completely away yet.

Blood Test: October 10, 1990

  • SGPT 229 IU/L; Normal level (11-45)
  • SGOP 119 IU/L; Normal level (11-35)

Examination: Patients condition is stable. Whole body jaundice is gone.

Treatment: Continue using Liver No. 1™ (爱华活肝片) 6 tablets each time, 3 times daily.

Blood Test: November 12, 1990

  • SGPT 36 IU/L; Normal level (11-45)
  • SGOP 30 IU/L; Normal level (11-35)

* Because Z Liao’s liver functions were severely damaged, even though both SGOP and SGPT indicators were back to normal levels, his liver functions still needed some time to fully recover. During this period of recovery, the patient continued to take the Chinese herbal remedy Liver No. 1™ ( 爱华活肝片).
